BUFFALO BEETLES (Alphitobius diaperinus)
Buffalo beetles (Alphitobius diaperinus) are a nutritious and versatile feeder insect suitable for a wide variety of reptiles, amphibians, birds, and insect-eating mammals. Rich in protein and healthy fats, they provide an excellent source of nutrition for growing, breeding, and active animals.
Both the larvae (commonly known as buffalo worms) and adult beetles can be offered as live feed, encouraging natural hunting and foraging behaviours. Their small size makes buffalo worms particularly suitable for juvenile reptiles, small geckos, frogs, fish, and insectivorous birds.
Buffalo beetles are easy to keep, have a long lifespan, and are simple to breed, making them a popular choice for hobbyists and breeders. For maximum nutritional value, they should be gut-loaded with high-quality vegetables and feeds for 24–48 hours before feeding and dusted with calcium or vitamin supplements when required.
